Cara Hancox is a multi-dimensional artist, whose primary medium is acrylic augmented by paper, tissue, fabric, textural media and found objects. She studied art history at McMaster University in Hamilton before moving to Quebec with her young family in 1985, where she pursued a career in interior design. By 2000 Cara segued into furniture and design sales in Montreal, and later, Ottawa, where she represented industry suppliers Robert Allen Fabrics, Barrymore Furniture, and Capel Rugs. During those years, she absorbed a wide range of international designs and style influences during her business travels.
Since retiring Cara has painted consistently, creating mixed media and landscape inspired work. When not in her studio, she creates custom-painted furniture finishes on everything from yard sale finds to cherished antique pieces.
Cara has supported her development as a visual artist through local association workshops and courses. She was an active member of Ottawa Arts East and OMMA, the Ottawa Mixed Media Association, and her paintings have been exhibited widely in the region. In 2024 she relocated to Belleville with her husband, filmmaker Rick Hancox. Cara continues to explore techniques such as layering collage and glazing with paint. Most recently, she completed a course in abstract landscape painting led by Prince Edward County painter, Megan Fitzgerald, which has proved a perfect fit for engaging her many landscape photographs created over the past decade.
