Frances Key
The 2021 Show - Journey of Frances Key
in chronological order
Bereft of my interaction with friends, family and living in a rural setting, the systemic physical and mental restrictions imposed by the pandemic challenged me to rethink my work as a practicing artist.
By emptying the studio of all previous work, minimizing the space, I gained access to solitude and clarity. To connect with the most important people in my life, I needed to fill the space with their portraits.
My approach was to interpret my friends in a more subjective manner. The portraits reflect their emotions, body language and feelings as impacted by the pandemic.
These companions in my studio are theatres of my mind, portrait memories of time spent together and now frozen in time. They give me great comfort and release from the imposed isolation. They greet me as I enter my studio.
