Ilse Nel-Landers

My art is fueled by emotion. Some abstracts are purely emotional pieces, conveying the raw, immediate expressions I am feeling in the moment. I paint them intuitively and unaltered. Similarly my natural scenes, that emerge from both real places and landscapes of memory and imagination, are deeply connected to the quiet emotional depths of the scene. They are rendered with bold, gestural mark making and textures that become a visceral language of feeling. I build each painting in layers, using varied techniques that allow underlying histories to peek through. The works that emerge aim to communicate the complexity of emotions along with the magnificence and intrigue of life.
